1981 Royal Wedding - Charles and Diana
29th July 1981: Charles and Diana marry
Crowds of 600,000 people filled the streets of London to catch a glimpse of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer on their wedding day.
The couple were married at St Paul's Cathedral before an invited congregation of 3,500 and an estimated global TV audience of 750 million - making it the most popular programme ever broadcast.

Britons enjoyed a national holiday to mark the occasion.

Lady Diana, 20, arrived almost on time for the 1120 BST ceremony after making the journey from Clarence House in the Glass Coach with her father, Earl Spencer.

Started brewing in November 1980. Brewing stopped for a period in the summer of 1982, during whoich the beers were brewed at Godsons. Following a number of reported finiacial problems the brewery was taken over in 1983 and finally ceased brewing in 1985, when the location was taken over by Wiltshire Brewery.

Founded in Harwich in 1723, this brewery has had a chequered recent history. Initially Cobbold & Co Ltd, it moved to its current location in 1746. It merged with Ipswich's other large brewery, Tollemache's Breweries, in 1957. It was then acquired by Ellerman Shipping Lines in 1977. This itself was taken over by Barclay Brothers in 1983. Brewing ceased in 1989 following a takeover by Brent-Walker and production of Tolly brands was transferred to Camerons. However some of the management immediately launched a management buy out and Tolly Cobbold started brewing again, and once more independently, in September 1990. The original brewery was replaced in 1995 with a smaller modern plant but is used for brewery tours. Announced in July 2002 that they had been taken over by Ridleys and the brewery would close before the end of the year with only Original being brewed at Ridleys.

Brewing originally started at this site in 1824 as Usher's Wiltshire Brewery. Merged with Watney Mann in 1960. Ownership transferred to Grand Metropolitan who accepted the offer of a management buy out in 1990, the brewery regaining independence and taking it's current name. The brewery was closed during the first months of 2000, as it was, in accountants speak, "not cost effective" despite running at full capacity. The company still owns the pub estate and renamed itself to Innspired Pubs plc. The beers brewed under the Usher name are brewed for Refresh UK.
