Founded in 1847 although brewing had been taking place at what is now the brewery tap, The Ship & Bell, for some time before that. A larger brewery was built behind the pub by 1869. In 1896 the brewery was sold but is still owned by the family that brought the brewery. Taken over by Fullers in November 2005, the brewery closed at the end of March 2006 with all production being transferred to Fullers.

When brewing started in 1983, this brewery was known as Glenny Brewery. In 1987 they moved to an industrial estate on Station Lane, Witney to allow further expansion. The name was changed to Wychwood in 1992. In October 1994 the brewery moved back to their original site, taking a larger portion of the old maltings. Expansion has lead to a 110 barrel brewplant being used. The brewery was taken over in the spring of 2002 by Refresh UK.
