Started brewing at the John Thompson Inn in 1983 as a brewing company to brew beer for the pub and the freetrade. Ceased brewing at the John Thompson Inn during March 2002. Some of their beers were being contract brewed by Leadmill until the end of 2002. It is now believed that they are being mainly brewed by Tower.

Formed from the merger of King & Sons, a maltsters set up in 1850, and G. H. Barnes & Co., a brewers dating back to 1800, in 1906 this family owned brewery survived until they were taken over by Hall & Woodhouse in Spring 2000, with all production at Horsham ceasing. Sussex Bitter and Old Ale are brewed at Hall & Woodhouse, Mild Ale is brewed at the Hall & Woodhouse owned Gribble Inn. The last member of the King family involved in the company still brews in Horsham as WJ King & Co (Brewers).

Brewing started in the old stables beside The Plough Inn in April 1980. A steady expansion resulted in a new larger brewplant in 1992 as a result of the purchase of the name and brands of Sam Powell. Further expansion followed in 1996.

Young's started brewing at this site in the 1830 although brewing is believed to have been carried out on this site since 1581. It is as such the oldest site in continuous beer production in the UK. The brewery has been one of the main bastions of real ale during the keg and nitro-keg revolutions. Announced in May 2006 that by October 2006 the brewery would close and production would transfer to a new company, of which a 40% share will be owned, formed by a merger with Charles Wells to become Wells & Young's Brewing Co Ltd. Young's will continue as a pub group.
